    "He just doesn't understand the area," Mr Christmas said.

    He said restaurants along the Esplanade would not work because it was too windy.

    "We would have had restaurants there 35 to 40 years ago if it wasn't for the wind," he said.

    Meanwhile Mr Sarroff said he would back calls from leading Gold Coast businessman John Witheriff for the city to obtain a second casino licence.
